About Juneteenth
It may surprise you to hear that I didn’t know that other African-Americans (usually East of Colorado/Kansas) were unfamiliar with Juneteenth. For those of you who’re like…Michelle-I’m not American or African-American, here’s a quick video on what Juneteenth is. By the way, the guest who I’m speaking with in today’s creator conversation is who produced the video below.
This weekend Denver had its Juneteenth celebration and observation (Juvenile was the musical guest) it’s always a great time and a wonderful opportunity to be in community with one another. Juneteenth in Denver isn’t just an observation of a historical event.
It also gives Denverites a chance to:
Support the many Black businesses sharing food, fashion and other interesting items at the festival.
Eat a ton of food
Enjoy music and dancing
In a heavily gentrified city such as Denver, Juneteenth is that time where we really come together. What does any of this have to do with today’s creator?
History Content Creators
One of the most fascinating types of creator niches to me is the History niche. I’m often struck by how history often depends on who is telling the history and is invested in sharing the truth of the story. Historians such as Khalil Green and Michael Motley (today’s guest) are making a name for themselves while insuring that we learn the story about who we are in this and that we live in.
But-what about the money? How are they able to pay for their time and fund the work that they’re doing while staying true to their brand mission?

Some Thoughts…
Often when we see stories about creators making money online the creators that are being shared are designing very “Meta” projects such as:
How I Make Money on Threads
How to Make Money on Facebook
How to Make Money Using LinkedIn
We don’t often hear about creators who are building something different and unexpected. I absolutely love the project One Mic Black History and am so excited to share how Michael Motley is monetizing an incredibly important project and what it’s like to build a content forward brand where he’s not the face of the brand.
Some things that I thought about during our conversation:
How technology has created the opportunity to grow impactful and meaningful work such as One Mic Black History.
There is a tension that creators in certain spaces have to navigate related to monetizing in a way that makes sense for the creator, the work that they’re doing and the audience they’re serving.
The importance of being in community with other creators who can help with your monetization efforts-especially how to deal with low-ball pitches.
