One of the most important moments in my hang out with Lucy a couple of weeks ago was when I started to cry because I was struck with emotion. What she didn’t know was that my Grandma was in the process transitioning of becoming an ancestor and I was dealing with intense grief. She was so kind and just said “We’re human, go ahead and cry” That acknowledgement of seeing another human being in pain and pausing-in moment in time where everything feels like tactics, numbers and leveraging game theory-Lucy being human and kind was one of the most important unintentional marketing moments she could have had.
I felt seen.
Marketing a brand isn’t just about where you show up, it’s HOW you show up. Are you friendly, kind and interested in what other people are doing? Do you seek out collaborations and are unbothered about the idea of competition because you believe that there’s plenty to go around? That ease shows in how you show up. Lucy is a great example of actively being in community and when her Substack accidentally got deleted (AAHHHH!!!) her community showed up for her, got the word out and helped her avoid losing her momentum during a really stressful moment.
