What to Do When Your Business Year Isn't Going As Planned

We’re 7 days away from the month of July. This year has been both the longest and shortest year of my life. The list is long as to why, I’m sure some reasons as to why won’t surprise you. Basically, life has been “lifeing” That said, sometimes there are seasons in your business when what you planned for…isn’t working. I had no idea how fascism would impact me energetically, or how much time a wonderful opportunity would require or that my beloved grandmother would pass away.

I’m mentally very tired. And I’m really sad right now.

That said, I think it’s the right time of year to have the following conversation-how to not be overwhelmed during difficult seasons in your business and how to plan for the second half of the year. Next week I’ll be talking about the next 6 months. Today, I want to share what I’m doing to help me make my way through this difficult time. Before I do….

      • We recorded this conversation in late 2024-This was perfect timing for revisiting the topics in this conversation. I fee so energized after watching it.

Fortunately, we’re heading into the second half of there year where there’s a ridiculous amount of opportunity to be leveraged.

How to Regroup

(When Things Aren’t Working)

When 2025 started, I had an idea of how I wanted things to go. In many ways things have gone well. In others-things aren’t working out the way that I wanted them to. I way underestimated how stressful this year would be. In fact, I’m working on this newsletter from the mountains because I just needed a break.

Tip #1-Double-Down on Rest and Wellness Practices

I knew that I would end up spending more on wellness and rest related practices in 2025. What I didn’t anticipate is that I will likely have to double the time and budget that I factored related to rest. What that could look like:

  • An overnight retreat-That’s what I’m doing right now. I’m in the mountains at an undisclosed location where I plan on doing some work, relaxing and sitting in the hot tub.

  • Booking a ResortPass Experience-I’m obsessed with this tool. You can use it to enjoy hotel, spa or similar amenities for the day. I love using this both in Denver and when I’m traveling out-of-state

  • Free and Paid fitness classes-I am out-of-shape. It’s driving me crazy. I’m making a point of taking fun fitness classes.

Tip #2-Pause and Evaluate

When you realize that you’re lost in a forest it’s always a good idea to stop, assess and make a plan. For me, the midpoint of the year is a fantastic time to evaluate what has and has not worked for the first 6 months of the year. One thing that I’m aware of is that-the second half of the year is a HUGE EARNING OPPORTUNITY due to the holiday season. In pausing and evaluating what I’m doing I do the following:

  • Looking at where my time is going-I was producing a podcast, participating in a fellowship, doing my own work and family stuff was going on. That was…a lot. I was way overextended this Spring making it difficult to for me to focus.

  • Pay attention to the chatter-I’ve noticed that I’m not the only person talking about overwhelm and noticing obvious changes in their business. Basically, things that aren’t going well might not be 100% a YOU problem.

  • Look at the data-Get granular with the data

    • Where are subscribers coming from?

    • What type of content resonates with your audience?

    • What are people paying for?

    • What do people hate?

    • What do people love?

Tip #3-Design a New Plan

(And, Be kind to Yourself)

It can be really tempting to become angry with yourself when it feels like things aren’t working the way that you want it to. Sometimes life is like that. I also believe that sometimes things don’t work out because something better is around the corner connected to the new plan that you’ve designed. In fact, I’m starting to notice the following:

  • As I pivot my process-other opportunities are opening up.

  • Suddenly, I’ve had a number of inbound referrals. People are sharing my work with other folks.

  • Late Spring/Summer-Can slow down as people travel, relax and focus on other things.

Sometimes you just have to make an adjustment, rest and pivot your focus and the outcomes you’re wanting. Do you resonate with this?

Creator Opportunities

I’ve always been in the habit of sharing creator opportunities. I realized that it would be cool to share thoughtfully curated opportunities in this newsletter. I’m sharing 5 Creator opportunities AND the 45 minute creator conversation with Juniper Stokes of Alchemessence in today’s newsletter.

  • AirMedia New Voices Program-This is the fellowship program that I participated in this Spring.

  • Buinho Creative Residency (Portugal)-If you’re a Maker Creator-this opportunity may be for you.

  • Podcast Movement Scholarship (DEADLINE JUNE 27th!)

  • Cannes Lions-Prepare for 2026. Read about and learn what Cannes Lions is and the scholarship opportunities that they have available for attendees.

  • Visit Vietnam with Anela Malik-I recently interviewed Anela for Creators Getting Paid (did you watch the interview? You can HERE) She is based in the travel and food space and has a FREE TRIP TO VIETNAM!!! That she is offering to one of her paying subscribers. This sounds so cool. And, check out her new book.

I LOVE this conversation. We talked about the following:

  • Monetizing an energetically designed business and brand

  • Her three pillars of monetization

  • The price range for her products

  • How she designed her monetization breakthrough and practice.
