Are You Behind on Your 2024 Earnings Goals?
One of the ongoing conversations that I’ve kept noticing content creators having is that this year business seems to be all over the place. There are some headwinds impacting what they’ve been building for years and the frustration and reality that they can’t live off of nothing is making people quit on their business dreams. I thought that this was an important conversation and a great time of year to have it with the Creators Getting Paid audience. I also want to share some tips on how to get through these moments in your online business because they will hard times happen. In creative businesses, though, those hard times can feel deeply tied to your sense of “self” versus an audience’s changing interests, income or the need for a creator to pivot their messaging or brand.
Let’s unpack this.
Yesterday I had a wonderful meetup with some friends that I’ve known for at least 8 years. These are highly paid content creators who make their livings through a mix of done for you services and other projects. They primarily make their money through freelance writing though. These 6 figure earners are well-known in the industry and for the past couple of years (since OpenAI) they’ve made money but it has been harder than in previous years.
I had already bailed of freelance writing as a primary means for earning income because I didn’t enjoy it and I also just had a sense of the volatility a bit earlier than my friends. The volatility for me was related to dealing with editors, getting enough assignments and just building up a sustainable freelance business and so I dcided to pursue other ways to make money online.
I’m glad I did.
During this week’s conversation I was struck by how tired my friends were with navigating the intracies of friction in building a digital business. Like me, my friends are also in the US-we a lot going on and I think sometimes we just get tired of the constant pivots and testing. I’m sharing this story because if you’ve been struggling building your business and brand-you’re not alone. Several of my friends have fun side-hustles as a way to pay for fun stuff and they have been actively diversifying their income.
It takes time.
What we all acknowledged was that growing a newsletter, list, clientele, etc. takes time. And that time to money ratio can be scary.
