Some Final Thoughts About Impact
Last week I shared a number of different ways to measure success to the Podcasters Getting Paid section of this newsletter. It was only after I hit “send” that I missed what is likely one of the most important measurements of success…impact.
Impact is defined in a couple of different ways:
Forcible contact between two objects
Having an effect on something or someone else
For this post, I’m referring to the work that you’re doing effecting other people in a positive of negative way. Typically, as creators, we may have started our projects because we want to serve a community, space or focus on a topic of interest that we feel may be underserved or not talked about enough-or from a viewpoint that hasn’t been shared.
Impact as a Measurement of Success
Impact can be experienced in a number of different ways.
Direct or indirect feedback from your audience telling you that the work that you’re doing has resonated with them, helped them or inspired them.
Winning awards, grants or scholarships-This is an acknowledgement by the space that you’re in that they value the work that your doing.
Earn more money-Maybe your expertise translates to product/book or course sales because of a demonstrated expertise. This is a tangible way to measure impact.
I bring up impact because you have to take different strategic action in order to connect with different types of impact.
This is important.
One of the things that I want people to think about as a part of Creators Getting Paid is the importance of focused action and how it connects with what you actually want.
Each measurement of success requires a different type of focus and that focus can affect other goals.
If you’re wanting impact then you might get awards but this could impact your focus on other goals.
If you’re wanting to earn money-then you may have to take different daily actions.
Want podcast downloads, video views or website sessions as a measurement of success? That’s a focused action.
Be honest with yourself about what you actually want for your business.
You’ll Need to Make a Decision
Whatever it is you want-you will have to focus on it. But, something else will have to be paused or focused on at a different time.
If you follow me on Twitter you may have noticed that I have announced that I won’t be attending conferences in 2024.
I love conferences.
But for the goals that I’ve set in 2024-I need the time that is spent on conference travel to focus on working towards my primary goal for 2024. I plan on recording a podcast episode about taking a year off of conference attendance and how I will continue to make connections with people in the spaces that I’m in even though I won’t be attending conferences.
Time to Be Honest
I had to be honest with myself that I am completely unable to work on 5 business related goals at the same time well. It’s just impossible for me to do. There’s a reason why so many creators bring up the fact that you need to apply singular focus on a goals for a sustained period of time.
I bring all of this up because it’s that time of year where we are beginning to access what worked, what didn’t work and what we want for the upcoming year.
If you want…
To win awards-You focus on designing award winning content.
To be known as an authority-You focus on taking action that defines you as an authority.
Earn affiliate income-you create and work on more affiliate content.
Podcast downloads-You focus on marketing and designing podcast content that gets downloaded.
Video watches-You focus on marketing and designing video that gets watched.
You can have it all…but it will be very difficult to work on all of these at the same time.
