It is April 30th and I’ve just spent the past week resting. This spring has been hectic for so many reasons, I was a fellow in the Air Media New Voices program, had my own personal projects and was developing a podcast for a non-profit. Then there’s the wild times we’re in. I’m finding that I have to aggressively rest, refresh and incorporate movement into my life so that it’s possible for me to achieve the goals that I’ve set for myself.
With that in mind, why is that I’m gearing up to increase my workload more during the summer? Because summer is one of the best times of year to plant business seeds that grow into success during the Fall and Winter months.
Myself,
and Corey Gumbs will be talking about what we plan to do this summer on Thursday, May 1st at 6:00 pm MTN/8:00 pm on our show “Shh, We’re Talking”Today I’m sharing some tips that might not make it into tomorrow’s conversation. You can enjoy your summer and still build your brand.
Thank You!
I also wanted to say “Thank You” to everyone who has attended a free or paid workshop and office hours during the month of April. And a huge thank you to every free and paid subscriber of Creators Getting Paid. You make this project worth doing and you make it happen. It has been so wonderful for me to meet the amazing community members that I serve with Creators Getting Paid. You are appreciated.
Podcast Episode
I was a guest on The Tech Jawn, a podcast that covers all things tech. It’s also the only podcast that I’m aware of hosted by an all African-American panel. I was brought on to talk about building on Substack. We talked about Amazon, facial recognition and more. I hope you get a chance to listen to the episode.

Your Next $1,000 (June)
One of the challenges specific to summer as a content creator is that business momentum can slow down. I’m launching a live challenge beginning the first week of June called “Your Next $1,000” the goal of this challenge is to help creators to continue earning money with their work during the summer.
This is a “live” challenge. I will host once a week (voluntary) office hours for participants
I’m running this on a cohort model, participants can sign up until the end of May.
The challenge begins the first week of June.

Why Summer is The Best Time to Grow Your Business
If there is a summer where I need to rest, go to a Beyonce concert (sadly, I have to give up my ticket) see Kendrick Lamar, go hiking or soak in the hot tub-it’s this year. But, I’ll be working as much as a normally do during the summer.
In fact, I work A LOT during the summer and that continued focus has paid off more often than not during Fall. The business seeds that I plant during make it possible to take an extended break from mid-November through mid-January.
Here’s What You Can Do During the Summer
(To Grow Your Brand and Income)
Be a Guest-pitch and be a guest on podcasts, in front of other people’s audiences. What’s nice about recording guest episodes during the summer is the release dates for those episodes. Typically late summer, early fall. This content release cycle that you don’t have to manage-helps to build up momentum in YOUR business.
Attract Media Mentions-The summer can sometimes feel like a slower news cycle. It’s a great time to reach out to and pitch local newsrooms about the work that you’re doing, a unique story or event that you may be hosting. If you get media mentions make sure to document those mentions and company logos so that you can share those later with your audience.
Batch Content-Summer is a wonderful time to get ahead your content creation schedule. Most people, including myself, will slow down parts their content distribution schedule. Typically this happens because audience demand has slowed down. This slow down presents a great opportunity to batch evergreen content, work on creative projects that you normally wouldn’t have the time to do or prep newsletters, challenges, etc. The goal is to get even 2 weeks ahead so that you have more breathing room as things get busier later in the year. I batch content a couple of times a year and it just makes life so much easier.
Send Pitches-Summer is a FANTASTIC time to pitch people you would like to collaborate with, brands you would like to work with and organizations you feel a synergy with.
Work on Sales Related Activities
Whether you’re building a part-time or full-time business, you need to be making sales. Those sales could be of products, services or even interactions with affiliate links. The slower summer season gives creators time to tighten up sales systems, analyze what is and isn’t work and make thoughtful adjustments.
Do a Sales Audit
Ask yourself the following questions
What is working?
What isn’t working
What products or services does your audience respond to most?
Are you selling more products, etc. on which platforms?
What is the price point that you’re most confident selling at and that your community members purchase at the most?
Double your efforts wherever you’re seeing the most success.
Take Your Break
I’m in no way suggesting that you DON’T enjoy your summer. Take your breaks, rest and rejuvenate. I typically will go to a cool new location and work from that location. I’ll go hiking, enjoy cute coffee shops and soak in the hot tub.
Design your work with your end goal in mind.
What are you (business) plans for summer?
