How Unscripted Podcasts Can Set Up Their Shows for Monetization
There are a lot of benefits to hosting an unscripted show. You’re able to create in the moment, discuss interesting things that pop up overnight such as a interesting pop-culture moment, a political situation or a seasonal issue.
Unscripted podcasts are great but they can make podcast monetization challenging for a few reasons.
If you’re working with brand partners it’s hard to tell them what your content will be without a content calendar.
You’re constantly in reaction mode because you’re reacting to something that has come up.
These podcast episodes might not be evergreen. It’s my belief that whenever possible if your monetizing focus on evergreen content that will continue to attract listeners throughout the year. What do I mean by evergreen? Content that stays relevant over time needing minor tweaks each year. I’ve shared some examples across genres below.
How to Prepare for a Recession in 2023 (Not Evergreen)
How to Prepare for a Recession (Evergreen)
How Star Trek Changed Sci-Fi (Evergreen)
How Last Night’s Star Trek Discovery Episode Sucked (Not Evergreen)
How Social Media Helps Grow Online Brands (Evergreen)
How My Twitter Thread Last Night Grew My Business (Not Evergreen)
Monetization growth happens as a result of being intentional. Some hosts are resistant or uncomfortable with creating editorial calendars in order to meet their monetization goals.
Here’s What Unscripted Podcasts Should Do
Create an Evergreen Segment in all of your episodes-You can have more than one evergreen segment within your show. Here are a few examples of what that could look like:
Weekend Update on SNL is a great example of an evergreen segment in a comedy
Opening Monologue on SNL is a great example of an evergreen segment in a comedy show.
Personal Stories-Trevor Noah always shares personal stories in his content
Universal pain points-Hassan Minaj-he shares content around taxes, political situations, radioactive sperm and fatherhood.
Pre-Roll or End Rolls-Have fun with those segments in your show
Three Word End Segment-Archetypes by Meghan Markle-This podcast is absolutely scripted but this is a great segment that is shared in each episode.
Work on an Editorial Strategy for Each Podcast Season
There’s a saying that you have to “plan to win” You have to plan to monetize. While it’s possible to make money randomly without a plan-you won’t be able to grow those earnings. Be intentional about what you’re doing.
Design a theme for your season-I have a podcast about personal finance/policy and pop-culture. Currently I record episodes that I’ve identified to be of interest to me and my audience. This year I’ve covered the Student Loan Forgiveness policy and am currently discussing when women want more. These themes make sense when you consider the larger conversations around STUDENT LOAN FORGIVENESS and WOMEN’S RIGHTS. These themes are evergreen and I can continue to share this content for years while making content in the moment.
Create an ongoing joke-One of the funniest (weird) situations that I notice on Twitter is how everyone reacts to Nick Cannon and his new baby news. It’s this weirdly fascinating pop-culture collective experience that we’re now all in on. You don’t have to be a comedy show to do this. You can just share something that’s really funny to you and your audience. Nick Cannon and his progeny have become a part of a larger conversation…that we’re not going to get into.
Video Ideas-Design a t-shirt that goes with the theme that you’re focused on for this season. You could just…wear the t-shirt or hoodie when you record your content. It could include a phrase that comes up all the time in your content. Make money while elevating an evergreen moment/theme in your content.
Ultimately, all of these ideas have a couple of things in common.
Create an evergreen content idea that you weave through your content.
Be intentional-Recording in the moment is very attractive because on the surface it feels like it takes a lot less planning. BUT, having switched how I create content, I can say with 100% it’s a lot more time intensive to do weekly recordings.
Spend time reflecting on what your show’s goal is and how monetizing your content aligns with that goal. Are you monetizing….
To cover the cost of running your show?
To pay for your time?
To pay for help to run your show?
To donate towards an important cause?
