My Podcasting Break is Over
I’ve been podcasting for at least 7 years. In fact, I’ve focused on the craft of podcasting for so long that it’s hard for me to remember when I actually started. It’s wild to me to think that I started my podcast using Free Conference Call (dot) com. I was so broke that was all I could afford.
I appreciate them so much.
Over the years there has been an ebb and flow to creating content on my podcast. Then COVID hit. I was not one of those people who was able to leave those years unscathed.
Finally, at the beginning of 2023 I just ran out of steam. So, I took a break. Or, if I’m being honest-the break took me. It was one of the best things that I could have done. And even though I did record one episode about the Billionaires and the Titanic…I was done with actively podcasting for 2023.
Relaunching the Show
(So, what happened?)
Yesterday I relaunched my Michelle is Money Hungry Podcast after a year of just sharing previously recorded episodes. For those of you who are unfamiliar with my show, it’s a multi award winning podcast discussing the intersection of money, policy and power with a splash of pop culture and money.
People listened to the show!
Here are the statistics after 1 day :) Monday, January 22, 2024.
What YOU Can Do After a Podcasting Break
Maybe you’re needing to take a podcasting break or the break took you. There are a few things that I did to prepare to relaunch the show. These tips may help you if you’re looking to relaunch after a long break.
Share your upcoming season’s content in broad terms-You do not need to tell people exactly what the episodes will be. But you could communicate if you’re pivoting the content, designing a unique season or doing the same as before. In my case, I decided to do a branded season that would capture the interest of my ideal listeners.
Connect directly with your supporters-These may or may not be people who’ve listened to your show. Maybe these folks just are fans of you. In my case, I sent a few Twitter DMs, email messages and shared on Facebook that I had released the first episode of my new season. Then my dear friends and supporters bookmarked and retweeted what I was working on and had shared with them.
Be thoughtful about content design-Does your episode make sense for the people you would like to listen to your show?
Episode titles matter-There are a few things I would think about when working on the title of the episode.
Are people searching for the topic of the episode? I spend a lot of time searching for podcast episodes on different players and I’m unable to find content because hosts have episode titles that are too complicated, don’t communicate what the show is about or are confusing.
Avoid sharing your guest’s name in the episode title-I know, I know you might not want to hear this. But, unless it’s a super famous person, very few people know who your guest is. Instead, lead with the TOPIC of the conversation and then the name of your guest if you want to include it. I am a frequent podcast guest and ultimately, the conversation will share my name and the project that I’m working on.
SEO matters-Learn how to use SEO or Search Engine Optimization in order to attract organic search to your content. This includes how you’re formatting your show notes. Tools such as CastMagic are a great way to utilize AI to speed up the process (and CastMagic doesn’t train AI with your content which I love)
Lead with your audience-What do THEY care about and want to listen to?
Thinking about these components adjacent to your content will help attract listeners/viewers to your content after a long hiatus from your show.
