Before I get into the meat and potatoes of this post-I want to make it CLEAR that this post is for people who are and are NOT attending in-person events. Just because you’re not flying to Denver in a couple of weeks doesn’t mean that you can’t leverage that event and leverage that opportunity to share your communities, share your wisdom and sell your products.
Podcast Movement Denver is just around the corner and I am really looking forward to attending-I love it when conferences are held in my town. So it may surprise you to find out that today I’m sharing….
Why I am NOT attending any conferences in 2024.
You can listen to the podcast episode here. Since I don’t plan on attending conferences in 2024 that means that there’s A LOT riding on the conferences that I’m attending in 2023.
Growing brand awareness before my break.
Focusing on making in-person connections.
Communicating often how people can interact with my brand.
Thinking about how people discover my content.
Running surveys about how folks are finding me, what they are hoping I will help with and more.
Building a list or newsletter (you should be doing this too!)

How to Make Money at Podcast Conferences
Candidly, you could remove the word “podcast” from the title above and approach all conferences with the same philosophy:
You can make money at conferences
There’s immediate earnings and long-term earnings
If you’re serious about monetization and event attendance is a key part of that approach-designing a monetization strategy.
Goal #1 Always Recoup Your Financial Investment
Conferences are expensive to attend. They take up a lot of time, energy and money. I now have a very strict rule that I must be in the black within 4 weeks of any conference that I attend. Having this rule makes me focus on my bottom line and it makes me reassess-is this event worth attending?
Example:
If I spend $1,000 on an event, I must earn that back within 4 weeks of that event. Period. Then I pay attention to the long-term impact of the event.
Goal #2 Set a Goal for Any Event You Attend
This could be a monetary goal, a personal goal or professional goal. I don’t just go to events and attend to attend.
Examples of Goals for Conferences:
To actually attend the event-Sometimes just attending an event is the goal. It can take a lot of time, planning and logistics to make a conference happen especially if you’re in the US and have limited time off. Maybe this event is also a vacation as well depending on the amount of time you have to travel.
Speaking at an event-Did you pitch a session or panel for an event and it was accepted? Did you KICK BUTT with your talk? Were people coming up after your talk and raving about it?
Grow your email or newsletter subscribers-This is my current goal for 2023. My goal is to hit 10,000 subscribers for Podcasters Getting Paid by January 2024. This is a very aggressive goal (could you help me with it and share the newsletter).
Collaborate with a brand-Many brand partnerships begin as a result of making connections at a conferences. Attending a conference can get you in front of a brand’s team. These connections may take time to develop and pay off later.
Goal #3 Always Embrace the Opportunity to Make an Event Smaller
What do I mean? Events can often feel too big and can be overwhelming. Make events smaller by doing the following:
Join the Yoga class offered at the event.
Go running if there’s a running group.
Attend the fun events.
Hang out for coffee when you get a coffee invitation.
Enjoy all offsite hang outs.
Exploring the town that the conference is hosted in.
Enjoying the nature that the event is next to. One of my favorite conference experiences was learning how to surf with a small group of conference attendees.

Michelle Shares Her Make Money at Conferences Strategy
I deeply believe that your next conference’s monetization strategy begins the day after the event ends. Seriously. People make the mistake of focusing solely on event attendance.
Don’t do that!
