How to Build a Mission Driven Podcast Community
And Make Money at the Same Time
One of things that I absolutely love about Creators Getting Paid/Podcasters Getting Paid is the people this project attracts. More often than not, the community is filled with creators who are looking to serve and create community spaces that otherwise wouldn’t be created.
But how do you monetize a community?
And when monetizing a community how do you do it in a way that is ethical, thoughtful and helps further the mission and not harm it?
I think about this a lot.
These communities need money coming in to at least pay for the time and effort that it takes to:
Invite guest speakers to speak
Write a weekly newsletter
Host an event
Design and create resources
There’s more that I could add to the list but you get the picture. How do you walk that fine line of serving and making sure that you’re also taking care of yourself financially and protect the work that you’re doing.
Conversations with Community Builders
As I move forward with this project, I plan on having conversations with founders of different types of communities that serve.
Corey Gumbs founder of Black Podcasters Association
In today’s conversation I speak with Corey Gumbs. It’s a great conversation where he shares the following:
Why he created the Black Podcasters Association
Who is attracted to the project.
What he noticed in the podcasting space that gave him the idea to move forward with the idea.
How he launched imperfectly.
Being mindful of keeping his personal beliefs from influencing the interactions he has with his community-they are aligned via podcasting.
This is a wide-ranging 1 hour and 38 minute (ish) conversation that goes pretty quickly. It’s also relevant for anyone looking to create a community space.
