How to Avoid Additional Accidental Goals

Looking back at 2023 one of the things that I spent a lot of time working on for 2024 was simplifying what I was working on. As people working to leverage the internet to grow our communities, serve and try to make money-it often feels like we get bogged down by a number of unexpected adjacent goals. Not sure what I mean? I’m going to share some examples below.

Make sure to check out the bonus that I’m sharing with paid subscribers below.

Unexpected Adjacent Goals

  • Growing your social media followers-While I understand the motivation behind this goal I think it’s important to ask the following question…”Why are you growing your social media followers? What purpose does it serve your brand and business?”

  • Speaking at a conference-Maybe initially you planned on just attending a conference and networking with the other attendees. Then you decide to speak at it, changing the original goal.

  • Designing a product-I’m a huge fan of products, but how many products do you need to make in one year? Have you given yourself enough time to assess if your initial product is working? Maybe you need to set adjust your sales copy or work on clarifying who your product is for?

  • Showing up everywhere-You cannot be everywhere all of the time. This is unreasonable and unsustainable. What do I mean? There is a current talking point that people building brands/projects online have to show up everywhere. By that what I mean is to engage on every social media platform. In my view it’s completely unsustainable. Instead, create a plan that allows you to ethically leverage other people’s platforms. If you know that you can’t focus on growing a YouTube channel, be a guest on a YouTube creator’s channel with a similar audience. Be of service to them. By ethically leveraging a person’s platform what I mean is asking yourself how your content can compliment and add to the content that the creator is doing and is likely not going to cover on their platform.

    • Some examples

      • If you do provide legal templates for creators because you’re a lawyer, then you could partner with any creator to talk about the legalities of sharing content online.

      • You design retreats for online focused businesses and the creator whose platform you would like to speak with is comprised of women designing online businesses.

Why Do I Bring This Up

It’s the beginning of 2024 and this is the time when many of us are setting new goals. Or, maybe we’re working on on-going goals from last year and we’re trying to figure out…why didn’t it work?

  • You’ve set too many goals-When you have split focus, it slows down your ability to achieve a goal. If you have more than 3 goals for your business at any given time, that may be why you’re not achieving them. It’s up to you to decide the period of time you work on your goal(s). It’s possible to have multiple goals during a year, but maybe you’re not working on all of them at the same time.

    • Daily-I keep things as simple as possible on a daily basis. I have a maximum of 3 must happen action items a day and everything else is a bonus.

    • Weekly-Sometimes I’ll have one thing that absolutely has to happen during the week. Once that’s achieved, I decide on a new goal.

    • Monthly-Maybe you have a 1 time goal that supposed to be achieved during a specific month.

    • Quarterly-Your daily, weekly and monthly goals were designed to help you achieve a quarterly goal.

    • Annually-There’s a theme here. All of your cumulative actions will help you to achieve goals for your year.

  • You’ve skipped some of the steps to achieving your goal-If you’re looking to earn $10,000 a month then there are steps that you take to achieve that goal. Those steps usually included making $1,000 then $2500 in order to hit the $10,000 goal (even though you can absolutely have a launch that hits that number).

  • Too many technical moving parts-Running an online brand can have a lot of moving parts. Those could include, and aren’t limited to, the following.

    • Editing audio

    • Editing video

    • Scheduling Tweets

    • Sending an email

    • Providing transcripts for podcasts

      • Use a tool like CastMagic to help streamline, simplify and create an easier work flow. What I love about CastMagic is that it doesn’t feed your content into OpenAI (a huge concern of mine related to Intellectual Property-IP) Check it out and let me know what you think.

Question for You

What were some of your accidental bonus goals that you unintentionally created in 2024? How did those additional goals affect your workflow and brand?
