This Month Has Been Rough
I wish more people would be candid about the fact that being a content creator can be both really rewording and really tough at the same time. This month (March 2023) has been one of the most stressful that I’ve had since I started working for myself. I share this to say that if you’re having a rough month-I see you. Let your friends know and if you get a chance to hang out with alpacas like I did-do! There was a free alpaca event that I got to check out this weekend and these funny little animals made me feel better about things.
Affiliate Marketing Continued…
At least once a week when I’m hanging out on social media I’ll see variations of the following question: When is it the right time to begin monetizing? Or, people will ask is it too early to begin monetizing? The answer really is “Begin monetizing when you’re ready.” There are some important things to consider before you begin monetizing before launching your show or earlier than what you’ve seen from other podcasters.
Money mindset-This one is painful. I learned this the hard way that monetization will have you in your feelings and not in the best way. I spent a lot of time asking myself questions like:
Is it ethical to monetize in the way that I’m thinking about?
Can people afford what I’m charging or asking for?
Am I even an “expert?”
Who am I to think that I should be paid?
Doubts-If you decide to monetize outside of what the “peanut gallery” says is the right time you may find yourself doubting yourself.
Systems-You’ll need to set some systems in place in order to achieve your goals.
Jeannine Crooks-AWIN Global Affiliate Network
Watch the following recorded conversation (keep scrolling downwards for link to the video) between myself and Jeannine Crooks. We talk about the following:
What is affiliate marketing and how does it work?
How podcasters can affiliate market
Is affiliate marketing MLM or Multi-Level Marketing and what is the difference between the two?
How you could set up your own affiliate program
Jeannine shares why engagement is more important than massive social media numbers.
Jeannine shares some insight into the Amazon affiliate program and some candid feelings about how the program treats its affiliates.
We talk about cross-device tracking and how it impacts affiliate commissions. Don’t know what it is-it’s so interesting (and slightly big brotherish LOL)

What Jeannine and I Discuss
What is affiliate marketing
Is affiliate marketing dead?
Is affiliate marketing the same as MLM-it’s a big difference and important to understand.
I ask Jeannine if she is currently working with and noticing podcasters successfully affiliate marketing.
Key Tips-Jeannine brings up show notes. Do you have a website that you host your show notes? If not, I recommend Ionos.com, I actually host two websites on this platform and it’s super affordable.
How to renegotiate affiliate partnership terms and how to successfully get a “yes”
Why I Love Affiliate Marketing
(For content creators new to monetization)
Think of affiliate marketing as monetization with training wheels. It’s a great way to learn monetization strategy within the context of YOUR content. You as a creator don’t have to have your own product, good or service in order to help your audience out.
You can research and find products that you think will serve your audience and help them with problems that they may have. I’m going to share three personal examples below. Yes, I have several podcasts LOL!
Personal Finance Space-I have a podcast called “Michelle is Money Hungry” if I’m recording an episode about the cost of groceries I would share the following affiliate “Ibotta” because it is a grocery savings app. I would also talk about the fact that it’s a Denver based company and that I’ve met the CEO.
Colorado and Travel Space-I have a podcast called “Square State Colorado” and if I record an episode about visiting Rocky Mountain National Park-I would include information on Viator which is a tour company that I recommend. I would also talk about the fact that you can leave mountain driving to tour company and all you have to do is meet the bus at Union Station downtown.
Online Content Creation Space-I have a podcast called “The Brand Building Lab” it’s all about building online brands and content creation. For creators who don’t have a website and are trying to figure out which platform to start with I recommend a platform called IONOS (dot) com. Then I would share that I host two websites on that platform. One downside, it’s super affordable but once a year the website goes down and I have to speak to customer service.
